Overview

Scuba diving in Mombasa

The coral reefs off Mombasa’s north coast, including the waters around Mombasa Marine National Park, are within easy reach of the Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu hotels. This trip arranges guided dives with a licensed local dive operator, with options for certified divers and for first-time divers who want to try scuba with an instructor.

How the day works

You are collected from your hotel in the morning and taken to the dive centre or the boat. After a briefing, certified divers go on guided boat dives, and beginners do an introductory “Discover Scuba” dive with an instructor in shallow water. The plan can be a half day with one dive or a longer day with two, depending on your experience and the conditions. You are then taken back to your hotel.

What you may see

Coral gardens, reef fish in large numbers, and sometimes turtles and rays. Visibility depends on the tide, wind and season, and the dive operator may change the site on the day for safety.

Good to know

Certified divers should bring their certification card and log book. Beginners complete a short medical questionnaire and briefing first. Please avoid flying for at least 18 to 24 hours after diving. Marine park fees and equipment are itemised in your written quote.

    Morning – Pickup and briefing

    Collection from your north-coast hotel, then a briefing and equipment fitting at the dive centre.

    Boat to the reef for guided dives, or an introductory dive with an instructor for beginners.

    Boat back to shore and the transfer to your hotel. A second dive can be added on a full-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discover Scuba?

It is an introductory dive for people who have never dived. An instructor gives a short briefing, you practise basic skills in shallow water and then dive with the instructor. It is not a certification course.

Can I do a certification course instead?

Dive certification courses take several days and are arranged separately with the dive operator. Tell us what you want to achieve and we can request a quote.

Can I fly home on the day after diving?

Divers should avoid flying for at least 18 to 24 hours after diving, so please plan your departure flight with that in mind. If you fly soon after, tell us and we will plan accordingly.
