Haller Park, on Mombasa\u2019s north coast at Bamburi, is one of the more unusual attractions on the Kenyan coast: a shaded network of walking trails and ponds built on land that used to be an exhausted limestone quarry. A long-running rehabilitation project, led by the Swiss agronomist Dr Ren\u00e9 Haller, gradually turned the bare quarry into the forested park and wildlife sanctuary visitors walk through today, and it remains a well-known example of industrial land restoration in East Africa.<\/p>\n
Walking trails wind past fenced habitats and open ponds holding giant tortoises, eland, oryx, buffalo, hippo and a resident population of Nile crocodiles, alongside butterfly enclosures and a reptile section. A giraffe feeding platform is a highlight for children, and the park\u2019s shaded paths and fish ponds make it a comfortable half-day out, even in the heat of the day.<\/p>\n
Because the paths are flat, well-marked and shaded by mature trees, Haller Park suits a relaxed pace for families with young children as well as older visitors who prefer not to walk long distances in the sun. A local guide can point out plant and animal life along the way and explain the site\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
Pickup is from Mombasa and north-coast hotels, and the visit itself usually takes around two to three hours, including time at the giraffe platform and the crocodile and tortoise areas. It can be combined with a Mombasa Old Town visit or a Bamburi beach afternoon for a fuller day.<\/p>\n
